Google's Olympic Sized AI Blunder

Google's "Dear Sydney" Olympics ad struck out with viewers big time. The spot showed a dad using Google's Gemini AI to write a fan letter for his daughter. But instead of a heartfelt message, it came off as a lazy shortcut.

The backlash was swift, with critics calling out the ad for missing the whole point of a sincere fan letter. Faced with the negative feedback, Google decided to pull the commercial.

Another reminder that no matter how advanced, AI still struggles to replicate genuine human emotion and connection. When it comes to pouring your heart out to your heroes, there are no easy outs.

Zoom Wants an AI-Powered Piece of the Workplace Pie

Using language models from OpenAI and others, Zoom's AI Companion will help write, edit and organize documents right in the app. It's the latest move to become an "everything workplace" as Zoom faces stiff competition.

But will lower prices and the lure of less mundane work be enough for businesses to break up with Big Tech? Zoom is betting big on AI's transformative potential to find out.

OpenAI's Hidden AI Watermark Dilemma

OpenAI has been sitting on a ChatGPT watermarking system that could help detect AI-generated text for about a year. But they're torn on whether to release it.

While it could help teachers spot AI-assisted cheating, OpenAI worries it might scare away users who value discretion. Nearly 30% surveyed said they'd use ChatGPT less if watermarking was added.

So OpenAI finds itself in a bind - be responsible and potentially lose customers, or stay mum and let the unchecked AI writing continue? It's a high-tech Catch-22 for the AI giant.

For now, the watermark remains under wraps while OpenAI ponders its next move. But with pressure mounting, a decision may come sooner than later.
