ElevenLabs' DIY Audiobook Platform Takes On Audible
ElevenLabs is opening its audiobook self-publishing platform to all authors, challenging Audible's dominance with more attractive royalty rates. Authors can now create AI-generated audiobooks and publish them directly on ElevenLabs' Reader app, earning approximately $1.10 when listeners engage with content for over 11 minutes.
The move comes days after ElevenLabs partnered with Spotify for AI narration and follows their recent $180 million funding round. With traditional audiobook production requiring expensive studio time and voice actors, ElevenLabs offers authors a more affordable alternative while expanding its consumer-facing business.

Silent Protest: UK Artists Release "Soundless" Album Against AI Copyright Grab
In a creative act of digital defiance, 1,000 musicians including Kate Bush and Hans Zimmer have released a completely silent album titled "Is This What We Want?" The project protests the UK government's proposed copyright changes that would let AI companies train models on artists' content without permission unless creators actively "opt out."
Organized by Ed Newton-Rex (ironically, a former AI music startup founder), the album features empty studio recordings symbolizing what artists believe will be their future if the law passes. Track titles spell out "The British government must not legalize music theft to benefit AI companies."
With 47,000 creative professionals already signing a related petition, artists warn they'll distribute their work elsewhere if the UK continues its AI-friendly approach.

Meta Caught Red-Handed: AI Training's Copyright Problem
Meta employees were playing fast and loose with copyright law, according to newly unsealed court documents. Internal chats show staffers discussing using copyrighted books for AI training with the philosophy of "ask forgiveness, not permission."
One engineer even suggested buying retail e-books rather than licensing content properly, while another mentioned potentially using Libgen, a notorious piracy site. The team brainstormed "mitigations" like filtering out files marked as "stolen" and programming their AI models to refuse questions about their training data.
Meta apparently needed more content than what Facebook and Instagram posts could provide. With authors Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates among the plaintiffs, Meta has added Supreme Court litigators to their legal team – a sign they know they're in deep trouble.
